Snoring affects up to 40% of the adult population.
It can place great stress on relationships, affecting the individual as well as the sleep of partners, family members and friends during travel or trips away. Snoring can be very loud and disruptive to sleep patterns and significantly affect your quality of life.
What is snoring?
Snoring is a hoarse, rumbling sound which is caused by the vibration of soft structures at the back of the throat. The vibration is due to the partial airway obstruction during sleep.
Why do I snore?
In normal sleep, air passes through the nose and past the structures at the back of the throat. These include the soft palate, uvula and tongue. When you are awake the muscles hold the airway open and while you sleep they relax. For non-snorers, the airways stay open and breathing is silent during sleep. However, if these muscles over relax the airway will become partially obstructed. The tissues will then vibrate creating the distinctive sound of snoring.
